If you grew up in the Philippines, you already know Tongits. It's that game you play during fiestas, on lazy summer afternoons, or whenever the barkada gets together and someone pulls out a deck of cards. Originally popularized in Luzon, Tongits is now played from Ilocos all the way down to Davao — and it's one of the most-searched card games among Filipino online players today.
Tongits is a three-player rummy-style card game that blends skill, memory, and a bit of bahala na (a Filipino term for leaving things to chance). The goal is to empty your hand by forming valid card combinations — melds and sets — before your opponents do. But it's not purely luck. Knowing when to draw, when to discard, and when to call a "fight" (sapaw or draw) is what separates winners from everyone else.
At DDJili, we built the Tongits experience specifically for Filipino players. The interface is straightforward, the rules follow the classic Luzon style most Pinoys know by heart, and the real-money stakes make every round feel just like playing for keeps with friends — except the payout comes straight to your GCash wallet.
New to Tongits or just want a quick refresher before jumping into DDJili's tables? Here's how it all goes down.
The dealer distributes 12 cards to each of the two non-dealer players and 13 cards to the dealer. A standard 52-card deck is used, no jokers.
Arrange your cards into valid melds — three or more cards of the same rank (a set) or three or more consecutive cards of the same suit (a sequence/run).
On your turn, draw from the stock pile or pick up the top discard. Lay down melds on the table and discard one card to end your turn.
Go out by emptying your hand completely (Tongits!), or call a "fight/draw" when the stock runs out. The player with the lowest deadwood (unmelded card points) wins.
You can add cards to an opponent's meld on the table. This "sapaw" move reduces your hand and can block opponents from calling Tongits.
Play DDJili Tongits on your phone just like strolling down Calle Crisologo — history and excitement in every step.
| Card | Point Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ace (A) | 1 point | Lowest in sequences |
| 2 – 9 | Face value | Standard count |
| 10, J, Q, K | 10 points each | High deadwood risk |
Lower deadwood = better chance of winning in a fight/draw scenario. Try to keep your hand lean by melding high-value cards early.

Tongits isn't pure luck — there's real skill involved, and experienced players consistently outperform beginners. Here are some practical tips you can use right away at DDJili tables.
Get rid of high cards early. Face cards (10, J, Q, K) carry 10 deadwood points each. If they're not forming part of a meld, discard them as soon as possible. Holding onto a King of Spades hoping for a run is risky — especially if the stock pile is running low.
Watch what your opponents discard. This is the most underrated skill in Tongits. When someone throws a card, it tells you what they don't need — which means you can figure out what they're building. If two players are both throwing 7s, chances are nobody needs them and you can freely discard yours too.
Use sapaw defensively. Layering onto a declared meld on the table is not just about reducing your hand — it can also stop opponents from going Tongits. If someone is clearly about to empty their hand, a well-timed sapaw can force them to draw again.
Know when to call the fight. If the stock is about to run out and your deadwood is 10 points or less, calling the draw is almost always the right move. Don't wait for a perfect Tongits if you already have the lowest count — take the W.
Manage your bankroll at DDJili. Set a session budget before you start. DDJili offers tables at various stake levels — start at lower tables if you're just warming up, and move up as your confidence builds. Never chase losses; the next round is always a fresh start.
